Words from the Council President

I would like to give thanks to each member and staff of council for their support in electing me, Dah-Shyong Yu, to be the 14th president of this association. From the spectacular leadership demonstrated by the preceding presidents and the combined efforts and cooperation of each committee and member, the affairs involved with this association can operate smoothly and excel daily. Since my succession as the president, I have deeply felt the weight of my responsibilities, and often ponder about how to bring this association and the services provided to each member’s life and career to the next level. The following seven key points listed below illustrate the goals of this association, and hope that each scholar and member not hesitate in providing your opinions.

1. Rearrangement and Recreation of the organization, collective cooperation in providing services in all aspects, and specifically outline and expand the functions and control of each committee in order to serve the members:

Due to the continued growth of the members in this association, and the business affairs increasing rapidly, the association will implement collective cooperation and services in all aspects when faced with complicated internal and external environments. The association has recruited seven regular committees and five committees with specific functions. Through group strategies and teamwork of each committee member, the committees aim to collaboratively provide a more complete service in every level to each member in the association.
2. Expand scholarly exchange internationally:
The association has recently established an international affairs and benefits committee, which was added for the purpose of managing the affairs involving academic and cultural negotiations and exchange internationally. It is hoped that through international communications, the views of urology in this country can be broadened.
3. Manpower planning of specialty doctors and career planning consultation for members:
The association will provide classes involving career planning and manpower management planning in the future. It is hoped that the members can thoroughly utilize this service for planning and management, delineate a personal blueprint, have an effective self understanding, and have an objective realization of the environment and the required resources. Through these effects, the members can understand themselves, have a firm grasp on life, and make their dreams come true.
4. Strengthen and integrate educational training – Each specifically functioned committees, medical ethics education, training for the improvement of specialties in hospitals. Devise principles and clinical treatment guidelines:
5. Strengthen and integrate the classification and collection of research groups
6. Fight for appropriate compensation from the Bureau of National Health Insurance

A new policy concerning the compensation standards of medical claims from National Health Insurance was established on July 1st, 2004. In the new system, urologic surgery has increased by 8% compared to the old system. And, in the examination and testing section, the points assigned to extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (50023B, 50024B) have decreased dramatically. The association is still aggressively negotiating with the central Bureau of National Health Insurance for appropriate compensation, and has asked Taiwan Surgical Association to integrate the opinions from all surgical specialty associations. The opinions can serve as important references in the request to the Bureau of National Health Insurance for the amendment of compensation.
7. Thoroughly assume social responsibilities

The association has, throughout the years, organized professional teams and provided online medical consultation services. Also, the association has organized many seminars in the prevention of urologic diseases and health maintenance. In the future, the association will periodically join forces with other medical associations and coordinate social and public welfare events together. Through each social activity, good medical atmospheres can be created, and this effect on society can serve as another type of contribution to society.

The future goals for the improvement of relevant affairs will include:
1.. Update and enrich the format and content of the newsletter from the association
2. Update and enrich the content of the association website.
3. Upgrade the journal
4. Categorize and establish multiple levels for the secretarial office
5. Work diligently to ensure the academic and professional balance, internationalization, and diversification.
I will, along with each committee and each member, utilize all our efforts to complete the above mentioned key goals. I hope that each member can be able to participate in the process. Finally, suggestions from each member will be appreciated. It is my sincere hope that each member can continue to work hard, and work corporately so the association can not only be maintained permanently, but also able to improve and excel continually.
